What is a web agency, and how does it differ from a design agency?
A web agency takes responsibility for the whole path from the first idea to a working website. That covers structure, content, design, code, launch and upkeep. A design agency usually delivers the look of a site and hands the build to someone else. Both models work, but the difference matters on the day a contact form stops sending enquiries and you need to know who to call.
| Question | Web agency | Design agency only |
|---|---|---|
| What do you receive? | A working website, live and tested | Layouts and design files |
| Who writes the code? | The agency, or specialists it works with | Another provider that you hire separately |
| Who is responsible after launch? | Agreed in writing, often with the agency | Usually nobody until you find someone |
| When does it fit best? | You want one contact for the whole result | You already have developers and only need layouts |
At Digital030, concept, design and development come from one hand. Simon Krebs, who founded the agency in 2017, leads every project personally. When a project needs extra skills, for example in development or design, he brings in independent specialists, and you still deal with one contact.
Which technology should your website be built with?
The right technology follows from what the website has to do and who will edit it, whether you hire a web developer in Berlin or an agency elsewhere in Germany. There is no best system in general. We build with Next.js and React, or with classic content management systems such as WordPress and Webflow, and we choose after we understand your requirements. Our own website is built with Next.js.
| Your situation | Usually points to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You change texts and pages often yourself | A content management system with an editing screen | Who installs updates, who holds the admin accounts, and how content can be exported |
| The site changes rarely and loading speed matters most | A lean build with few moving parts, for example with Next.js | Who can change a phone number or opening hours later, and how |
| You need calculators, multi-step forms or many generated pages | Custom code with a clear data source | Documentation and handover, so that you do not depend on one person |
| You sell online | A shop system chosen for your products and payment methods | Fees per sale, tax and shipping rules, and who maintains it |
Whatever you choose, ask every agency four questions. Who owns the domain and the accounts? Can you export your content? Who maintains the software after launch? Which third-party services load on your pages, and do you need them?
How does remote work with a web agency in Germany run in practice?
Website development in Germany with a remote agency runs in clear steps, and each step ends with a written result. We meet by video, agree the milestones in advance, and nothing goes live without your approval. The first call is free, takes 30 minutes and can be in English or German.
- First call. We ask about your goals, your audience, your current site and who decides on your side.
- Scope and quote. You receive a fixed quote before the project starts, with a list of pages and functions and a note on what is not included.
- Structure and content. We agree the page tree and the texts, and tell you which photos and facts we need from you.
- Design. You review layouts for the home page and a few key pages, then we apply the approved style to the rest.
- Build on a test address. You click through the site on your own phone and computer and send corrections, and we work through them.
- Launch and handover. We publish the site and hand over access, domain details and documentation.
Decisions are written down, so that they are easy to find and to forward.
What should you know about hosting and data protection for a website in Germany?
Where your site is hosted and which services it loads affect your data protection tasks, especially when forms collect personal data. We discuss hosting with you before launch, and we offer hosting and ongoing care if you prefer not to manage it yourself.
- Where are the servers, and who operates them?
- Does the provider offer a data processing contract?
- Which scripts, fonts and maps from other companies load on the site, and are they needed?
This page stays general on purpose. Imprint, privacy notice, cookie consent and similar duties depend on your business, and we are not a law firm. Our guide to website legal requirements in Germany lists the topics with sources, and a lawyer should check your own case.
How are accessibility and loading speed built in?
Both are easier to build in than to repair later. We design for phones first and check the Core Web Vitals, which are Google’s measures of loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability. We also check the basics of accessibility, such as readable contrast and text descriptions for images.
A concrete case is Hygiene Meister, a glass and building cleaning company in Berlin-Reinickendorf. The old WordPress site loaded a hero video of 123 MB. In the rebuild the video shrank to about 4 MB, and the Lighthouse score on mobile rose from 57 to over 90 (lab measurement, October 2026). A lab score differs from what real visitors experience, and the figures belong to that project, not to yours.
Some German accessibility rules apply to certain online services. Whether they affect you depends on your business. Our German-language page on website law and accessibility (German) explains the topic and its sources.
What happens after the launch?
A website needs regular care, and one person or company has to be named for it. Software ages, access details change and forms can fail without anyone noticing. We offer maintenance, hosting and ongoing care on request, and we write down who does what.
- Updates and security fixes for the software the site runs on
- Backups, including a restore test now and then
- A test enquiry through every form, so you know that messages arrive
- A watch on domain and certificate expiry dates
- Small content changes such as opening hours, team photos or new pages
If you prefer to look after the site yourself, we hand over a documented build and show you how it works. We quote upkeep after the first call, like everything else, because we publish no prices.
What does it look like to work with companies outside Berlin?
A project does not need a Berlin address. Web development in Berlin and Brandenburg is our home ground, and companies elsewhere in Germany work with us in the same way. Two published projects show different kinds of work.
DKZ Solar is a solar company in and around Magdeburg. Its website has a solar calculator, separate pages for 35 towns and 190 municipalities, and forms that send enquiries to the sales team. It went live in October 2026. Hygiene Meister has one page for each service and each area it covers, plus guides with checked sources.
Both projects are listed on the references page (German), where you can open the live sites and test them on your own phone.
Who is a good fit for us, and who should look elsewhere?
We suit companies that judge a website by the enquiries it brings, want one person to talk to and are comfortable working by video and in writing. We are probably not the right agency in these cases.
- You want a large account team with several project managers. You work with Simon Krebs directly.
- You only need a template site that you can set up yourself in an afternoon. An agency would be more than you need.
- You want a price from a web form without a conversation. We quote after the first call, because the scope sets the price.
- You expect promises about search rankings for the new site. We make none. Our German SEO guide explains why.
