What does a good business website need?

A good business website helps the right person find you, understand your offer and contact you within seconds. Four things do most of the work, which are a page for each service, speed, a layout that works on a phone and clear ways to get in touch.

  • One page for each service. Search engines and visitors both match a question to a page, and one page that lists everything rarely answers any single question well. A page for each service can explain the process, the typical questions and the next step.
  • Speed. Slow pages lose visitors before they read a word. Large images and videos are the usual cause, and they can be fixed at the build stage. Free tools can measure it.
  • A layout that works on a phone. Many visitors arrive on a phone while looking for a provider nearby, so the phone number, the form and the opening times must be reachable without zooming.
  • Clear ways to get in touch. Show the routes your customers actually use, such as a form, a phone number or a WhatsApp link, on every page, and confirm what happens next after a message is sent.

Which pages must a website in Germany include?

Business websites in Germany normally need a legal notice, called Impressum, and a privacy notice, called Datenschutz. Where the site uses tools that store or read information on the visitor's device, it also needs a way to give or refuse consent.

Links to both notices belong on every page, usually in the footer. The consent set-up has to match the tools you use, such as analytics, maps, embedded videos and ad tracking. These points are relevant for English-language pages too. The details depend on the business and the profession, and our guide to website legal requirements in Germany lists the sources. This is not legal advice, so have the final texts checked by a qualified person.

Should your website be in German, English or both?

That depends on who you want to reach. If your customers are in Berlin and Brandenburg, German is usually the main language, because that is what they search in. English pages make sense when international customers, partners or applicants are part of your audience.

A bilingual site works best when each version is written for its readers and is not merely translated word for word, because search terms differ between languages. Our German SEO guide explains this for search.

  • Give each language its own address and link the versions to each other.
  • Make the language switch visible on every page.
  • Start with the most important pages in the second language and add more later.

Simon Krebs speaks German as his first language and English fluently, so planning can happen in English while the German pages are written in German.

How does a web design project run from first call to launch?

A project follows a set order, and each step ends with something you can check. The schedule depends on scope and on how quickly content and feedback arrive, so we agree it in the first call and quote no standard duration.

  1. Free first call of 30 minutes about your goals, your customers and what exists today.
  2. A quote that states the scope, what you supply, what we supply and the cost, before work starts.
  3. Structure and concept, meaning the list of pages, the path from each page to an enquiry and the functions you need.
  4. Design of the home page and the key pages, with your feedback.
  5. Development on a test address that you can open and try.
  6. Testing of forms, links, the phone view and speed, followed by your approval.
  7. Launch, including redirects from old addresses if a site is replaced, and handover of the access details.
  8. Care after launch, if you want it.

Content is the most common cause of delay. Supply texts, photos and references early, and name one person on your side who can decide.

How do you choose between WordPress and a custom build?

Choose the system by what the site has to do. The answer depends on who edits content, how often it changes, which special functions are needed and who will maintain the system.

Your situationWhat it points toWhat to check
You edit texts and pages often and yourselfA content management system such as WordPress or WebflowWho does updates, backups and access control?
The site changes rarelyA lean build with few add-onsWho changes the phone number or opening hours later?
You need calculators, multi-step forms or special logicA custom build, or a system with a suitable interfaceIs the code documented and handed over, so that you are not tied to one person?
You sell onlineA shop systemPayment methods, mandatory shop information and returns

Digital030 works with Next.js and React as well as classic content management systems such as WordPress and Webflow, and chooses by your requirements. With any system, ask how you can export your content, which add-ons are needed and who maintains them, and what licences and hosting cost each year.

What happens after the website goes live?

A website needs regular care. Software ages, access details change and forms can fail without anyone noticing, so someone should be named for each task.

  • Updates for the system, the theme and the add-ons.
  • Backups, and a test that a backup can be restored.
  • A test enquiry through each form, so that you know messages arrive.
  • Renewal of the domain and the security certificate.
  • Changes to texts, opening hours and prices.

Digital030 offers maintenance, hosting and ongoing care on request, and you can also take these tasks over yourself. Either way, the domain should be registered in your name and you should hold administrator access, so that you can change provider if you wish.

Freelance web designer or web design agency in Berlin?

Both can do good work. The differences lie in cover, range of skills and how much coordination you do yourself. A freelancer is usually one person and an agency is a team, though size and set-up vary, so ask. These questions apply to either, and to Digital030 as well.

  • Who covers when the person is ill or on holiday?
  • Who handles design, development, copy and search optimisation?
  • Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the source code after the project?
  • What exactly is in the quote, and what is left out?
  • Which live websites can I open on my phone and check myself?
  • Who takes care of the site after launch, and what does that cost?

A web design company in Berlin is not automatically better because it is close. References you can check and clear agreements matter more than a short journey. Digital030 is based in Hohen Neuendorf, just north of Berlin, and works in Berlin, Brandenburg and across Germany. For a longer checklist, see how to choose a web design agency.

What decides the price of a website?

The price depends on scope, content, functions, design effort, technology and the care you want afterwards, which is why Digital030 does not publish fixed prices. After the free first call you receive a quote that states what is included.

  • Scope, meaning the number and type of pages, for example one page for each service.
  • Content, meaning who writes the texts and supplies photos, video and references.
  • Functions such as forms, booking, calculators, several languages or an online shop.
  • Design, meaning a template adapted or a design from scratch, and how many feedback rounds are included.
  • Technology, hosting and care after launch.

A useful way to compare offers is cost per year. Divide the one-off cost by the years you expect to use the site and add the yearly running costs. As a freely chosen example and not a price, a site that costs €6,000 once, is used for five years and has €900 of running costs a year works out at €1,200 plus €900, which is €2,100 a year. Use your own numbers, and read how much a website costs in Germany for more on what changes the total.

Hygiene Meister and Zulassungsheld as examples

Hygiene Meister is a window and building cleaning company in Berlin-Reinickendorf. Its previous website loaded a hero video of 123 MB. Digital030 rebuilt the site with fast pages, a separate page for each service and each service area, guides with checked sources and a before-and-after slider for glass cleaning. The video is now about 4 MB. In a lab measurement in October 2026 the mobile Lighthouse score rose from 57 to over 90. That is a lab result and not data from real visitors, and it is no promise for your site.

Zulassungsheld Berlin is a private vehicle registration service in Berlin-Wittenau. Its website has a page for every type of request, each with a fixed price, the process and the documents needed, and local SEO covers Berlin and the surrounding area. The business has an average of 5.0 from 49 Google reviews.

Both reference sites are in German. You can see them on the references page (German).

Frequently asked questions

What is a web agency?›
A web agency is a company that plans, designs and builds websites and often looks after them afterwards. Many also offer related services such as search optimisation, copywriting and advertising. Digital030 is a digital agency that does web design alongside SEO, ads and automation.
How much do agencies charge for a website?›
There is no single price, because it depends on the number of pages, the content, the functions, the design effort and the care after launch. Digital030 does not publish fixed prices and gives a quote after a free 30-minute call. To compare offers, ask each provider to quote the same list of pages and functions, and include running costs.
Is a freelance web designer cheaper than an agency in Berlin?›
Not necessarily. Compare quotes for the same scope and include running costs, cover during absence and the work after launch. A lower number may leave out content, search optimisation or maintenance that another quote includes.
Is web design still worth it?›
Yes, when the website has a job to do. It is still the place where search results, ads, reviews and recommendations lead, and where customers check that a business is real. It is worth less as a digital brochure with no clear next step, so judge a website by the enquiries it produces.
What does a business website need by law in Germany?›
At a minimum a legal notice (Impressum), a privacy notice and, where the site uses tools that need it, a consent set-up. The details depend on the business and the profession. Use our guide to website legal requirements in Germany as a starting point and have the final texts checked by a qualified person. This is not legal advice.
Who owns my website after the project?›
That should be settled in writing before work starts. Ask who is the registered owner of the domain, who holds the hosting account and the administrator access, and which rights you receive to the design, texts, images and source code. We recommend that the domain is registered in your name.
